President Heads for Likely Reelection

From Times Wire Reports

The government set June 15 as the date for a presidential election in which Franjo Tudjman is likely to win a second five-year term. Tudjman, who will be 75 on Wednesday and is reported to be seriously ill with cancer, will run as the candidate of his Croatian Democratic Union party and faces little opposition. The conservative nationalist leader, who led Croatia to independence from the former Yugoslav federation in 1991, is hugely popular despite allegations of corruption and authoritarianism within the ruling party.
