Andrei Medvedev of Ukraina, hampered the past two years because of back and shoulder injuries, won his first singles title of the year, defeating Felix Mantilla of Spain, 6-0, 6-4, 6-2, in the $2.3-million German Open in Hamburg.

Medvedev also won the German Open title in 1994 and 1995 and was ranked as high as No. 4 in the world until he was laid off because of injuries. He last won in August at Long Island.

Fresno State upset USC, 4-2, in the NCAA Region VII championships at Las Vegas. The Bulldogs (17-11) earned their fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA men’s tennis 16-team national finals, which begin Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in Westwood. The Trojans (18-6) will miss the finals for the first time since the team format began in 1977. . . . UC Santa Barbara (19-6) defeated Pepperdine, 4-1, at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu to claim the NCAA Region VIII championships. The Waves are 22-7. In NCAA women’s competition, Pepperdine defeated USC, 5-2, in the NCAA West Regional final. The Waves (20-7) advanced to the NCAA finals, which begin Thursday at Stanford. USC ends its season at 10-16.

Soccer

Paulo Wanchope scored two goals and Allan Oveido added another score as Costa Rica defeated Jamaica, 3-1, at San Jose, Costa Rica.

Costa Rica moved into second place ahead of the United States in regional qualifying for the 1998 World Cup.

Mexico is in first place with eight points in the group representing countries from North and Central America and the Caribbean. Costa Rica has seven points, followed by the United States with five and El Salvador with four. Jamaica and Canada have two points each.

The top three nations advance to next year’s 32-team soccer showcase in France.

Doctor Khumalo opened the scoring in the 29th minute for the Columbus Crew and goalkeeper Brad Friedel posted his second shutout as the Columbus Crew defeated the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, 3-0, at Columbus, Ohio.

The victory gave the Crew sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference with 14 points, one more than Washington and Tampa Bay.

Cindy Parlow scored two goals to lead the U.S. women’s national team to a 6-0 win over England at Portland and a six-game sweep of the Victory Tour.

Amanda Gall and Coralie Simmons each scored two goals as top-ranked UCLA women’s water polo team defeated No. 2 Cal, 6-3, to win their second consecutive NCAA title in the third year of their varsity program.

Goalie Tommy Salo made 32 saves, and Sweden defeated Canada, 3-2, at Helsinki, Finland to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three gold-medal round at the World Hockey Championships. . . . Charlie Taaffe, fired as the Citadel football coach after being charged again for driving under the influence, was hired as an assistant coach in the Canadian Football League. Taaffe will be the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Montreal Alouettes. . . . Ron Herrin, a four-year assistant men’s basketball coach at Southern Illinois, has died from an aneurysm at his Benton, Ill. home. He was 67. . . . Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh won their second tournament of the season on the Miller Lite/AVP Tour, defeating Randy Stoklos and Troy Tanner, 11-6, 11-13, 7-5, in the $100,000 Dallas Open. . . . Karolyn Kirby and Nancy Reno captured the $60,000 Cybergenics Open at Lake Buena Vista, Fla., defeating Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson, 15-11, in a Women’s Professional Volleyball Assn. tour match.
