The Other Oahu
This is in response to Leslie Selder’s letter (April 13) regarding Hawaii. The letter begins by downgrading Waikiki. As any seasoned traveler knows, there is much more to Oahu than just shopping on Kalakaua Avenue. It’s a fascinating island with many days of sightseeing by bus or car. Just a few minutes from Waikiki, up Kapahulu Avenue, and you are in the rain forest of Manoa Valley. A short hop to downtown Honolulu, and a whole world is open to you.
Here are just some of the sites that await: Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum, Foster Gardens, Honolulu Academy of Art, the historic area of Mission Houses, Kawaiahai Church and tombs, Iolani Barracks, and a wonderful walking tour of Chinatown.
Don’t miss the beauty and history because of a few T-shirt stands.
