Visiting Africa in San Diego

The San Diego Wild Animal Park will be taking visitors on an imaginary expedition this summer.
On May 24, the park opens “Heart of Africa.” The new exhibit, on 30 acres of the 2,200-acre park, aims to recreate a safari. Toting a journal detailing a mythical research trip, guests wander through dense forest and plains; cross a floating footbridge to a “research station,” where they can interact with staff and hand-reared animals such as aardvarks; view a savanna and feed giraffes; and finish in a waterfall and forest.
More than 260 animals, including cheetahs, monkeys and birds, may be seen en route. No shooting, please--except with cameras, of course.
The park is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. “Heart of Africa” is included in park admission: $18.95 adults, $11.95 children 3-11, free under 3. Information: (619) 234-6541.
