CUP HOLDERS RULE

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed reading “Driven to Drink” (by Preston Lerner, April 13). I had to read it to my husband, John; by the middle of the story we were laughing out of control. Lerner was right on in describing the way cup holders have become embedded in the national consciousness.
I remember clearly the day four years ago that the two of us went to pick up my new Jeep. I had with me the usual list of must-have options. No. 1 on my list was a center console with two cup holders. Both John and the salesman accused me of being irrational. It even reached a point where I didn’t care about the car’s color, so long as it had cup holders. The car we bought did.
Fast-forward to last October, when John dismissed my warnings and bought himself a car with no cup holders. In less than a month he realized his error, and at that point, an aftermarket add-on wouldn’t do. He had the whole console replaced with one containing an elaborate, fits-all-sizes cup-holder arrangement.
Is this a great country or what?
