Re “What Grows in L.A.? A Sardonic Slogan,” April 27.
As a masochistic previous owner of three Corvairs, I enjoyed Scott Harris’ suggested [slogan]--”Los Angeles: Unsafe at any speed.”
It seems a proper summary for everything about our great metropolis. I also endorse Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.” to be “our” song; how could anyone not like it and what it says? It has it all over “My Kind of Town.”
Even if I had a Corvair blow its engine 10 miles south of Jackpot, Nev., at 4:30 in the morning with my family of four kids aboard heading for Montana, I hardly ever lost faith in Corvairs. I knew exactly what wrenches to take with me when I crawled under to remove the engine. My record time for having it out on the ground was about 20 minutes. I did have quite a bit of practice. It might prove something, or whatever, that I also owned a Vega; now there was a terrible car!
I voted for the Green presidential candidate in ’92. I don’t remember who it was. In ’96 there was no way I could vote for Ralph Nader, not after all the terrible things he said about the car I loved to hate. Kinda how I feel about L.A.: love and hate.
