Santa Ana Man, 21, Fatally Shot Near Playing Children

A 21-year-old man was killed Friday afternoon during what police are calling a gang-related shootout, which erupted on a residential street where children were playing.

Police said Ramon Osorio of Santa Ana was at the north end of the 600 block of Daisy Street, and might have exchanged fire with another gunman farther down the street.

At least six shots were fired in the 3 p.m. exchange, police said.

“Apparently there was a confrontation of some kind between [Osorio] and another group of subjects,” said Sgt. Dan Beaumarchais, who oversees the Santa Ana Police Department’s gang unit. “We don’t know how many people were involved, but it appears the victim and the shooter were both on foot.”

After being shot in the upper body, Osorio managed to run a block away to his house on South Townsend Street, where his mother called 911, Beaumarchais said. Osorio was pronounced dead at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

No arrests had been made late Friday.
