Ex-Dogcatcher Is Cleared in Deaths of Strays

SWANSEA, Mass. — A former dogcatcher who resigned amid criticism over reports that he killed more than 600 dogs has been cleared of any wrongdoing by a state prosecutor.
Herman Camara, who quit in January, reported killing 639 of 762 stray dogs, nearly 84%, that he caught during the last three years. Camara said he tried to find the owners first. But critics said the figures suggest that he didn’t try hard enough, and they noted that he was paid as much as $60 for each dog he reported handling.
Jeffrey Michaelson, Camara’s attorney, said Thursday that the decision was a “complete vindication” for his client.
