Gore Shoots 69 to Qualify for the California Amateur

Jason Gore of Valencia shot a three-under-par 69 at Rio Bravo Country Club in Bakersfield on Wednesday to qualify for the California Amateur Championship.
Gore, a Hart High graduate who attends Pepperdine, led all qualifiers Wednesday. Jim Tassano of Camarillo shot 73 and is an alternate.
Tuesday, Ross Fulgentis of Westlake Village and J.T. Kohut of Simi Valley qualified at Arrowhead Country Club in San Bernardino and Brandon Jones of Agoura qualified at Steele Canyon Golf Course in Jamul. Fulgentis is a Westlake High graduate and UCLA freshman. Kohut is a sophomore at Westlake High. Jones is an Agoura High graduate.
The California Amateur Championship is June 16-21 at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course.
Ducking Northridge: Oregon has backed out of an agreement to play host to Cal State Northridge in a men’s basketball game next season, Matador Coach Bobby Braswell said.
The game was canceled by new Oregon Coach Ernie Kent, who beat out Braswell for the job. Kent’s former team, St. Mary’s, beat Northridge in December.
Swimming Bear: Cleveland High swimmer Mitchell Hefter has signed a letter of intent with California. Hefter is the two-time defending City Section champion in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events.
Hart High infielder Eric Horvat has committed to play baseball at Cal State Northridge.
Horvat, who has split time at third base and shortstop this season, is batting .539 with eight home runs and 34 runs batted in.
Rio Mesa High tight end Scott Fujita will attend California and has been invited to walk on with the football team in the fall.
State champs: The Conejo Valley United under-18 girls’ soccer team, coached by Cal Lutheran Coach Dan Kuntz, won the California State Cup, beating the Corona Revolution, 3-1, in the final in San Diego.
Rank and file: Cal Lutheran (33-7) is ranked No. 3 in the final regular-season NCAA Division III baseball poll, behind No. 1 North Carolina Wesleyan and No. 2 Allegheny (Pa.). The Kingsmen find out later this week whether they will host the two-team West Regional on May 15-17.
