Black and White: The word apartheid may be peculiar to South Africa, but racial discrimination is known everywhere. Which explains the title and theme of an art and theater festival at the Lankershim Arts Center in NoHo: “It’s All About Black & White: A Very Colorful Event.” . . . It features two plays by South Africa’s Athol Fugard. Above, Alysa Lobo rehearses a scene from “My Life.” Details in today’s Calendar Weekend, Page 32.
Night Reading: This particular strip of NoHo may be nothing to write home about, but local poets are flocking there, carrying words of wisdom, whimsy and woe. . . . They’re heading to Sam’s Book City on Lankershim, where the written word rules by day, but the spoken word captures the night. Calendar Weekend, Page 7.
Play It Again: Wade Sheeler, a Valley local and a graduate student at CalArts, has earned quite a reputation as a playwright. His “Vortex” has already been staged around the country, including at the Kennedy Center. . . . The play got its start at last year’s New Plays Festival at CalArts. See Calendar Weekend, Page 33.
Wet All Over: Increasing the odds of doing a belly flop, the Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park in Valencia has doubled the size of its Hurricane Harbor water park, located adjacent to Magic Mountain. . . . New features include a 75-foot tower with five water slides.
