Increase in ‘Road Rage’

Re “Rage Cruises the Highways,” editorial, April 29:
One of the reasons for the increase in freeway accidents is that truckers, who used to be the epitome of courtesy, have, for reasons unknown, taken to driving their trucks as if they were driving cars. Drivers of 18-wheelers can be seen repeatedly using the No. 1 lane to overtake vehicles already exceeding the speed limit, tailgating, closing gaps so motorists cannot access openings to change lanes and displaying anger.
Another reason is the “dumbing down of America.” What motorist doesn’t, on a daily basis, have to repeatedly pass other motorists using the No. 1 lane at unacceptably slow speeds or been caught behind an inconsiderate motorist who brakes or even comes to a complete stop to observe accidents or routine activities. Inconsiderate driving is just as dangerous as aggressive driving.
However, I believe the major cause of frustration and anger is Caltrans’ indifferent attitude toward the taxpayers. It’s not uncommon to see one or two lanes blocked off during peak traffic periods for sweepers, hedge trimming or graffiti removal. In most states, nonemergency maintenance is only done after 10 p.m.

* It sure doesn’t take a rocket scientist to make the obvious correlation between our current national 1-million-a-year legal immigration level and the increasing dangers accompanying our own “ever-worsening traffic” imbroglios.
