Major Gas Leak Forces Toddlers’ Evacuation

Scores of people, including 70 toddlers, were evacuated from a day-care center and a nearby business center Wednesday morning after a tractor-trailer delivering beer clipped a natural gas pipe and ruptured it, authorities said.
No one was injured, and evacuees were allowed to return to their buildings within two hours, after gas company workers repaired the leak, said Dennis Shell, spokesman for the Orange County Fire Authority.
The beer truck hit a pipe connected to the gas meter about 8 a.m., sending natural gas spewing out, Shell said. Among those evacuated were the children, ages 3 to 6, from the Kindercare Learning Center in the 26900 block of Estanciero Drive.
