Huntington Police Seek Gunman in Teen’s Death, City’s 1st Killing Since ’95

A Downey teenager was fatally shot early Tuesday during a fight with another youth, and police are searching for the gunman.

About 12:45 a.m., the 17-year-old boy was on his way to visit a friend in an apartment complex in the 16800 block of Lynn Street, where he was approached by a male from 17 to 20 years old, Police Lt. Dan Johnson said.

Following an argument, one went back to his car, took out a gun and shot the other in the chest, Johnson said. The teenager collapsed on the street near his friend’s home. His name was being withheld pending family notification.

Neighbors said they heard a loud argument prior to the shooting, but did not see the gunman.

“There are never any problems here,” said Carol Piraino, 33, who lives nearby. “This is a little scary that it happened so close.”

The killing is the first in the city since November 1995.

The gunman was described by witnesses as a 5-foot-8 Asian man with dark hair and a thin build, Johnson said. He was driving a black compact car.
