Meeting Will Help Parents Prepare for School’s Reopening

Peterson School, which will reopen in the fall, will host its first parent meeting Thursday to introduce Principal Dareen Yonts and discuss setting up a parent organization.

Yonts, formerly principal of John H. Eader Elementary School, also will be asking for suggestions about what enrichment programs the school should concentrate on, as well as about a mascot and school colors.

“This is the first opportunity for us to have all the parents together,” Yonts said. “We want to get a consensus from them on what direction they want to go.”

Parents also will receive a construction timeline and dates for future meetings and fund-raising events.

The Huntington Beach City School District approved the elementary school’s attendance boundaries last month. About 600 students will attend the reopened school in the fall.

Trustees decided to reopen Peterson to take advantage of a state plan that gives districts additional money for every student in a classroom with less than 20 children. The district will reduce class sizes in the second and third grades next year.
