Prep Players Win Honors at Monterey

Jazz ensembles from the Los Angeles County School for the Arts won two of the three major categories recently in the Monterey Jazz Festival High School Jazz Competition.
The school’s vocal ensemble, led by Pat Bass, won the vocal division; the school’s combo, led by Bobby Rodriguez, won the combo division. And the big band, also led by Rodriguez, placed second in the big-band division.
Individual members of the L.A. County School for the Arts ensembles also were acknowledged. Receiving awards were: Brandon Owens, outstanding soloist, combo division, and Matt Pittman, piano, outstanding soloist, big-band division.
Southland students selected as members of the 1997 Monterey Jazz Festival All-Star Band were Bram Glick, alto saxophone; Kevin Kanner, drums; and David Mayer, baritone saxophone, Hamilton High; Stewart Cole, trumpet, Matthew Pittman, piano, Brandon Owens, bass, and Warren Ontiveros, drums, L.A. County School for the Arts.
Awards include trophies, cash prizes and scholarships. The winning groups, as well as the All-Star Band, will perform at the 40th Monterey Jazz Festival, Sept. 19-21.
