Golden West Men Win Swim Championship

The Golden West men’s team won its third consecutive title at the state community college swimming and diving championships Saturday at Hartnell College in Salinas.

Golden West easily won, finishing with 675 points. Diablo Valley was a distant second with 517 and Orange Coast placed fourth with 311, 11 behind third-place West Valley.

Felix Sutanto of Golden West was selected swimmer of the meet. Sutanto swam on two record-breaking relays, including one that set a national record. He also had one individual record-breaking performance. In all, he won three individual events and swam on four winning relays.

Wisnu Wardhana won the 100 freestyle in 45.20 for Orange Coast. Wardhana also won the high-points award for the meet.

Albert Sutanto won the 1,650 freestyle for Golden West in 15:56.59 and finished the meet with three individual wins. He also swam on four winning relays.

Golden West’s Bill Jewell was selected coach of the meet.

On the women’s side, Orange Coast won, outscoring runner-up Diablo Valley, 430 1/2 to 366 1/2. Santa Rosa took third with 310 and Golden West rounded out the top four with 280.

Elsa Nasution of Chaffey was selected swimmer of the meet and won the high points award. Nasution won three individual events, including two national record-breaking performances.

Hilary Cox, formerly a Laguna Beach standout, swam on three winning relays for Orange Coast. She also finished among the top three in three individual events.

In Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Fullerton 9, Riverside 7--Bo Bryant had four hits, including a double, with two runs batted in for Fullerton (22-21, 8-16).

Brian Logan homered in the second, his 16th of the season, for Fullerton, a Hornet record.

Chris Piersoll pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts for Fullerton.

Golden West 8, Orange Coast 4--Kevin Stuart had two hits, including a home run, a double and three RBIs, to lead Golden West (13-29, 5-19). Jarra Jones and Casey Flanigan each had two hits for Golden West, which moved into sixth place. Orange Coast (12-30, 4-20) fell into last place.

Rancho Santiago 7, Cypress 6--Reliever Bryan Krill threw three scoreless innings to gain his second win of the season for Rancho Santiago (38-5-1, 20-4).

Craig Kuzmic and Junior Rodriguez each hit home runs for Cypress (33-10-1, 16-8).

In the Southern California Regional Tennis championships:

Orange Coast sends two to state finals--The Pirates’ Cami Erickson defeated Katie Jennings of Palomar, 6-1, 6-0, in the round of 16 to advance to the state finals. Erickson lost her quarterfinal match to Grossmont’s Julia Lyagina, 7-5, 6-3. In the doubles, Erickson and Whitney Gilliam defeated Jill Riley and Liz Shumaker from Irvine Valley, 6-3, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, Erickson and Gilliam became semifinalists with a forfeit win over a team from Long Beach.
