CSUN Study

I am a freshman at Cal State Northridge, and I was pleased to see the article on CSUN’s study of freshmen graduating after six years (“31% of CSUN’s Freshmen Graduate After 6 Years,” April 21). I feel that one of the major causes for delay in graduation has to do with improper advisement from counselors. I went to see my advisor for the spring ’97 semester and wanted him to help me choose a class that would be best for me and that would help me in my field. As I recall, he just told me to look at the catalog and pick any class, that it didn’t really matter what I took because I needed to complete my general education first. As I walked out of his office, I felt lost. I didn’t know what to do.
That article made me realize I am not the only student being neglected. I think the university should adopt a new way to help students make their way through college. It’s bad enough that many of us have to deal with a job, family and being a full-time student [without] having to deal with inadequate guidance.
