The Red Hot Organization is coming full circle for its next big AIDS awareness anthology album: a collection of contemporary artists performing George Gershwin tunes, in honor of what would have been Gershwin’s 100th birthday next year. The very first Red Hot album, 1990’s “Red Hot + Blue,” celebrated Cole Porter’s centennial with his songs done by such artists as U2, Sinead O’Connor and k.d. lang. . . .
The Indigo Girls will stage a pay-per-view concert June 6 from Boston. . . . The release of the Prodigy’s much-ballyhooed Maverick Records’ debut in June will also occasion the release of a largely acoustic version of the group’s hit “Firestarter” by the English electro-pop group Sneaker Pimps. It will be the B-side of a Pimps single. . . .
The group Shudder to Think is scoring the independent film “First Love, Last Rights,” with a variety of singers guesting, including Billy Corgan, John Doe and Liz Phair. . . .The Refreshments--who do the galloping instrumental theme for the Mike Judge cartoon series “King of the Hill”--are working in a Texas studio on a second album, with Butthole Surfer Paul Leary producing.
