FIRST PERIOD: MIGHTY DUCKS 0, RED WINGS 0

* IN REVIEW: The Red Wings looked rested and ready, having won their conference quarterfinal series Sunday against St. Louis. Detroit Coach Scotty Bowman played the Vyacheslav Kozlov-Sergei Fedorov-Igor Larionov line against the Paul Kariya-Steve Rucchin-Teemu Selanne line. Red Wing defenseman Larry Murphy provided the lightest moment of a tense opening period when Jari Kurri’s slap shot wound up in his pants. Murphy had to shake his leg repeatedly before the puck slid out onto the ice.

* SAVES: Ducks--Guy Hebert 13, Detroit--Mike Vernon 6.

* SCORING: None.

* KEY PLAYS: Hebert stopped five power-play shots after Mark Janssens took a hooking penalty at the 1:50 mark. . . . Selanne leveled Red Wing defenseman Vladimir Konstantinov along the boards after Konstantinov’s blind-side check on Rucchin midway through the period. . . . Kariya and Selanne failed to click on a two-on-one late in the period, the Ducks’ only scoring threat.

SECOND PERIOD: MIGHTY DUCKS 1, RED WINGS 0

* IN REVIEW: No, you weren’t watching a tape of the Ducks’ 1-0 overtime victory here March 30. But it sure looked like the same game plan: concentrate on defense and counterpunch when it’s there. The Ducks capitalized on their lone power-play chance of the period to score. Detroit went scoreless in three power-play opportunities.

* SAVES: Hebert 6, Vernon 8.

* SCORING: Ducks 1, Detroit 0--Kariya swept a rebound from the slot past Vernon for his sixth goal of the playoffs, and third on the power play, at the 19-minute mark. Defenseman Dmitri Mironov recorded his team-leading seventh assist of the playoffs.

* KEY PLAYS: Murphy broke up a two-on-one break in the period’s first three minutes. . . . Duck winger Brian Bellows and Detroit’s Kozlov each hit the right post within a few seconds of each other midway through the period. . . . Kirk Maltby cross-checked Kurri during a goal-mouth scramble at 17:24.

THIRD PERIOD: MIGHTY DUCKS 1, RED WINGS 1

* IN REVIEW: The Ducks adopted their customary third-period defensive stance and it worked well for 11 minutes, then Fedorov scored the equalizer. Hebert had no chance on the play and his playoff shutout streak ended at 120 minutes 46 seconds, dating to Keith Tkachuk’s third-period goal in Game 6 of the Phoenix series.

* SAVES: Hebert 9, Vernon 5.

* SCORING: Ducks 1, Detroit 1--Fedorov beat Hebert with a one-timer after Tomas Sandstrom’s blind pass to the slot from behind the goal line at 11:01. It was Fedorov’s first goal of the playoffs.

* KEY PLAYS: Sandstrom moved in deep past the defense and flipped the puck out front, which ranked as the play of the game to that point. . . . Fedorov danced through the defense again a moment after scoring, but Hebert kicked aside his shot.

OVERTIME: MIGHTY DUCKS 1, RED WINGS 2

* IN REVIEW: Unlike overtime in Game 6 against Phoenix, the Ducks came out flat and paid the price.

* SAVES: Hebert 0, Vernon 0.

* SCORING: Detroit 2, Ducks 1--Martin Lapointe skated hard to the net down the right wing, accepted a cross-ice pass from Brendan Shanahan and beat Hebert with a one-timer to the glove side at :59.

* KEY PLAYS: Lapointe and Murphy pried the puck away from Mironov in the neutral zone. . . . Lapointe didn’t miss with the one-timer and the Red Wings took Game 1.
