Council May Extend Reward in Shooting

A $25,000 reward for clues in a mystifying 4-month-old murder case will be renewed if the City Council approves a motion introduced Friday by City Council President John Ferraro.
Peter John Maloney, 37, was shot and killed Jan. 10 after picking up groceries at a Trader Joe’s store in Toluca Lake. Police said his assailant, described by witnesses as wearing black pants and a black hooded sweatshirt, rode off on a yellow 10-speed bicycle, having taken nothing from the North Hollywood victim.
With their investigation stalled, police announced the $25,000 reward two weeks after the shooting. Ferraro is proposing a 60-day extension. Few firm leads have been generated so far, authorities said.
A $2,500 reward put up by the Los Angeles Citizens Crime Commission remains in effect.
“We will keep extending this reward until the case is solved,” said Mary Presby, a deputy in Ferraro’s field office, which is about a half-block from the crime scene.
The slaying stunned the leafy community of Toluca Lake, which prides itself on being a Los Angeles neighborhood seldom disrupted by street violence.
“He had probably gone to the store to get something for dinner. We’ve all done that,” Presby said. “That’s what makes it so sad.”
Anyone with information is asked to call North Hollywood homicide detectives at (818) 756-8831.
