Fred Williams, former USC women’s basketball coach, said Wednesday he had withdrawn his name from consideration for the UC Irvine job.
Williams, 40, had a 33-23 record in two seasons at USC. The Trojans were 20-9 last season and reached the NCAA tournament.
Williams, a former UC Irvine assistant, was one of five candidates interviewed for the position. He still has one year remaining on a three-year contract with USC.
“I just decided I needed to take some time and decide what is best for me and my family,” Williams said.
The four remaining candidates are Anteater assistant Mark Adams, Arizona associate head coach Traci Waites, Chapman Coach Mary Hegarty and Cal State Dominguez Coach Van Girard.
