Sullivan Named State’s Top Scholar-Athlete

Cathleen Sullivan, a senior at North Hollywood High, has been chosen state girl scholar-athlete of the year by the California Interscholastic Federation.

Sullivan, a soccer player who has a 4.3 grade-point average and scored 1,510 on the Scholastic Assessment Test, will receive a $5,000 scholarship from ARCO and will be honored in Sacramento on June 5.

Sullivan was chosen from 10 girls, one from each of the state’s sections. Brady Beaubien, a water polo player from Coronado High, was named state boy scholar-athlete.

Sullivan, who will attend Amherst (Mass.) College, is the first girl from the City Section to be chosen state winner since the program’s inception in 1982.

Three-sport athlete Marcel Hovsepian, who ranks No. 1 in his graduating class at Monroe with a 4.0 GPA, was chosen the City Section boy scholar-athlete. He will receive a $2,000 scholarship from ARCO.

Ring return: Junior middleweight P.J. Goossen of North Hollywood will step into the ring for the first time in nearly a year when he faces Tim Payton in an eight-round bout May 9 at the Hollywood Palladium.

Goossen (17-0) has been idle since winning the International Boxing Organization title against Greg Lonon at the Warner Center Marriott last June.

The card also features junior welterweight Hector Lopez of Palmdale in a 10-round bout against Mario Azabache Martinez.

Former World Boxing Council welterweight champion Carlos Palomino will fight Wilbert Garst in a 10-round main event.

Heavyweight Jeremy Williams will headline the May 15 card at the Reseda Country Club.

Site changed: The venue for the first in a monthly series of boxing shows in Ventura County has been switched a second time, to Ventura County Fairgrounds on May 8.

A five-bout card will take place in a 1,500-seat indoor arena. Heavyweight Adam Flores and flyweight Carlos Madrigal, both of Oxnard, are scheduled to fight.

Sign ‘em up: Ramona Shelburne, a four-year starter for the El Camino Real High softball team, said she will sign a letter of intent today to attend Stanford on a partial softball scholarship.

Lauren McCartin, an outside hitter for the Saugus High girls’ volleyball team, has committed to Cal Lutheran.

Nick Marbach, a 6-foot-7 opposite hitter for Hoover, has committed to San Diego State.

Andy Rivera, a 6-3 opposite hitter for Eagle Rock, has committed to Cal State Northridge.

Alemany golfer Charles Ruiz has signed with Northridge.
