Andrew L. Gram III; Waste Management Engineer

Andrew Luythsen Gram III, 66, a consulting engineer who specialized in waste management systems to protect air and water. Working with the Long Beach civil engineering firm of Moffatt & Nichol since 1977, Gram prepared reports and recommended improvements for governments from Avalon on Santa Catalina Island to Chile, Switzerland, Malaysia and the Philippines. Part of his foreign consulting was under the auspices of the World Health Organization and the World Bank. Brought up in San Marino, Gram earned bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in civil and sanitary engineering from UC Berkeley and a master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He began his career working for the U.S. Public Health Service on the control of schistosomiasis in Puerto Rico. Gram later taught industrial waste management and radiation pollution control at Caltech for five years. He was consulted not only by clients but also by colleagues for his advice on technical hydraulics problems and computer engineering applications. Gram was an avid yachtsman and supporter of racing in California coastal waters and the Caribbean. On April 4 in Altadena.
