Some White House Papers Withheld

White House Counsel Charles F.C. Ruff has informed the chairman of a House committee investigating campaign-finance improprieties that he has withheld some subpoenaed documents, despite public assertions by the administration this week that it would turn over all papers sought by the panel. In a letter dated April 25, Ruff told Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) that the White House would provide a log of “those documents that we have not included in our production based upon applicable attorney-client and/or attorney work-product privilege.” White House spokesman Lanny Davis issued a statement asserting, “We have not asserted privilege on any materials requested by Congressman Burton in these subpoenas.”
