More than six months have passed since the Newport-Mesa Unified School District sold the farmland surrounding Costa Mesa High School, but a decision is still pending on how to spend the $7.1 million that the city of Costa Mesa paid for the property.
School district officials have said they need most of the money to pay for repairs at elementary and high schools across Newport Beach and Costa Mesa.
Some of the money probably will be used to offset expenses, such as buying portable classrooms or opening a new school as the district anticipates an enrollment boom.
Students and parents at Costa Mesa High School are circulating petitions, however, calling for the lion’s share of the money to be spent there, since the farmland was once part of that campus.
Some members of the community have proposed that a football stadium or a new swimming pool be built with part of the money and that some funds also be designated for buildings in need of repairs.
