In the city: Almost every Friday I attend community events. Los Angeles has a very large and diverse Mexican community that organizes many cultural, social and civic activities.
Saturday morning: For exercise, I jog several miles. I read Mexican and American newspapers and magazines. Though I do this every day, on weekdays I am able to dedicate extra time to this practice. I also listen to the radio: KLVE, KUSC and oldies like KRTH-FM. I like classical and Mexican music but I’m also fond of groups such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
Lunchtime: I get together with friends. We buy seafood in the Grand Central Market on 3rd Street and cook it Mexican style.
Cinemania: I like to watch independent films such as “Breaking the Waves” or “Shine.” I also enjoy popular movies, such as “Twister,” “Jerry Maguire,” “Anaconda” and especially “Selena,” which I strongly recommend.
Out and about: I visit historical landmarks, parks, museums and buildings of architectural value. “Guide of Historical and Cultural Monuments” and the “Community Cultural Atlas” published by the Cultural Affairs Department of Los Angeles are very useful. I like to walk through the different neighborhoods of Los Angeles and enjoy the beauty and diversity of the city that reminds me so much of Mexico. Santa Monica, for example, resembles my hometown, Mazatlan. I have lunch and share the afternoons with my family.
