Re “Mothers Pressed Into Battle for Child Support,” March 24:
The taxpayers should not be required to support unwed mothers and their illegitimate kids, regardless of whether the father is identified or not.
Pregnancy is not some kind of unavoidable disease or disability. It’s a fully preventable condition. If a young woman lets herself get pregnant out of wedlock, then she has made a choice to do so. And having made this choice, she should be held responsible for her decision. It is not the job of the government or the other working taxpayers to assume her responsibilities.
Society must make it clear that parents are responsible for their children. Let’s put the burden of support where it really belongs.
