Horizon Blows Lead, Then Loses

ANAHEIM — San Diego Horizon blew a nine-point, second-quarter lead and lost to Modesto Christian, 56-47, in the boys’ Division V state championship game Friday at the Pond.
Christian (33-0) trailed at halftime, 28-25, but used a matchup zone defense to outscore Horizon, 15-5, in the third quarter. Christian, which started three freshmen and a junior, went on an 11-2 run to begin the fourth quarter and was never threatened. The Crusaders shot only 28% in the first half but made 13 of 19 shots in the second half.
Junior Jaciel Red, led Christian with 28 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Freshman Brad Watkins had 17 points and nine rebounds. Junior forward Ray Harrington led Horizon (30-2) with 13 points and five rebounds.
