Daron Wilson and Jeremiah Turner, who helped Sylmar High win the Mid-Valley League championship and reach the semifinals of the City 3-A basketball playoffs, were named the co-most valuable players of the league.

Wilson, a 6-foot-4 senior forward, averaged 16.2 points and 13.7 rebounds.

Turner, a 6-5 sophomore, averaged 12.6 points and 10.9 rebounds.

Carloes Harper of Canoga Park was named most valuable player of the East Valley League. Harper, a 6-4 swingman who signed with Cal State Northridge, led the City in scoring at 28.6 points a game. Harper also averaged 11.4 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots.

Tashean Thomas of North Hollywood was named most valuable player of the Mid-Valley League. Thomas, a sophomore guard, averaged 15 points and 6.5 steals a game.

Poly’s Monie Simmons, who averaged 13.5 points, was named most valuable player of the East Valley League.

* Mike Penberthy of The Master’s College has been named most valuable player on the All-NAIA Southwest Region Independent men’s basketball team.

Penberthy, a 6-3 senior guard from Fresno Hoover High, averaged 27.5 points and 3.9 assists. He scored a career-high 48 points last Saturday to lead the Mustangs (21-11) to a 103-99 overtime victory over Rockhurst (Mo.) in the title game of the Southwest Region Independent tournament.

Center Leo Gorauskas, a 6-9 senior who averaged 16.4 points and 6.7 rebounds for the Mustangs, also was named to the all-region team.

Bill Oates of Master’s was selected as the region’s coach of the year.

Kim DeVries, a 6-foot senior center, was named to the all-region women’s team after averaging 14.8 points and 10.2 rebounds for the Mustangs (18-12).

Julie Wastell, a sophomore guard at Cal State Sacramento from Newbury Park High, was named to the All-Big Sky Conference women’s basketball team.
