Strickland’s Killer Instinct Helps as Northridge Wins

Chad Strickland had 18 kills with a .406 hitting percentage to help Cal State Northridge to a 15-4, 15-12, 15-10 victory over Rutgers in a nonconference men’s volleyball match on Tuesday night at Northridge.
Strickland, who was named the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. national player of the week on Monday, was one of three players to register double-digit kill totals for the Matadors (10-9).
The others were Jason Hughes with 15 and Eric Klootwyk with 14.
BASEBALL
Canyons 20, Mission 7--Hiram Damwijk’s three-run home run highlighted a 10-run fifth inning for the Cougars (17-6, 7-2) in a Western State Conference game. Damwijk had three hits and drove in four runs.
Frankie Diaz had three hits for Mission (10-13, 4-5).
Pierce 9, Glendale 7--Paul Prendeville’s run-scoring single tied the score, 7-7, and a bases-loaded walk to Greg Venger forced in the winning run in the seventh for the Brahmas (9-14, 3-6) in a WSC game at Pierce.
Oxnard 9, Ventura 8--Chuck Harrington, Shawn Fossen and Mike Muller had consecutive hits to break a 7-7 tie with two out in the eighth for the Condors (11-12, 4-5) in a WSC game at Ventura.
Burke Braun had a double, triple and two RBIs for Ventura (14-9, 3-6).
MEN’S TENNIS
Pepperdine 6, Loyola Marymount 1--Troy Budgen and Chris Hill posted three-set victories at Nos. 1 and 2 singles for the No. 9 Waves (11-4) in a West Coast Conference match at Pepperdine.
SOFTBALL
CS Dominguez 3-2, Cal Lutheran 2-5--Donna Scott had three hits and two RBIs, and Mandi Comer had two hits, including a run-scoring triple, for the Regals (14-3-1) in the second game of a doubleheader at Dominguez Hills.
Hancock 7, Valley 1--Lidia Olivares scored in the seventh inning on Jessie Leivo’s one-out single for the Monarchs (7-11, 3-2) in a WSC game. Leivo had three hits.
Moorpark 8, Pierce 6--Alicia Ramos had three hits--including a two-run double and a run-scoring triple--for the Raiders (11-13, 3-2) in a WSC game at Pierce (11-12, 3-2).
