Hart Loses Count and Maybe More

Hart High will likely have to forfeit its Westside baseball tournament championship because Brian Hernandez pitched too many innings.

Hernandez, a senior right-hander, pitched four innings against Hueneme on March 11 and threw a complete game in a 16-0 victory over Newbury Park on Saturday to win the Blue Division of the tournament.

High school pitchers are permitted by a state rule to throw only 10 innings in a week.

Hart Coach Bud Murray thought Hernandez pitched three innings against Hueneme but found the violation when he rechecked the score book Tuesday. Murray said he will contact the Southern Section office today.

“We made a mistake,” Murray said. “I’ll have to check with my pitching coach and make sure we don’t do this again.”

Game called: The Cal State Northridge baseball game against Cal State San Bernardino scheduled for today at 2 has been canceled.

San Bernardino is in the midst of finals and could not field a full team.

Exodous continues: Two more players have left the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball team, creating more space for Coach Michael Abraham to bring in recruits.

Junior guard Pam Karbowski, who also played soccer at Northridge, has decided to pursue that sport full-time. Sophomore guard La Toya Ward, who used a redshirt season because of a separated shoulder, will transfer to a school closer to her home in Virginia, Abraham said.

Guard Sarah Hagman decided to transfer midway through last season, before Abraham made his declaration that he would be cutting some players to free scholarships for recruits.

Abraham, who has signed three players for next season, has room to sign three more.

Hoosiers? Former La Canada High star Richard Mandeville reportedly plans to play basketball at Indiana next year after he and three other players were told by Coach Bobby Knight that they are free to play elsewhere next season.

Mandeville, a 7-foot center who averaged 2.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in limited action, Neil Reed, Andrae Patterson and Robbie Eggers, all juniors, met with Knight and were told what was expected from them next season and were told they would be allowed to transfer.

Reed said he will not return, but Knight, in an interview with Indianapolis television station WISH-TV, said Mandeville and Patterson plan to return.

Outnumbered: Calabasas High will forfeit its 4-1 baseball victory over North Hollywood on Saturday in the San Fernando tournament because Matt Sagoian pitched too many innings.

Sagoian pitched six-plus innings against North Hollywood after throwing four against Birmingham on Tuesday.

At a loss: Junior welterweight Hector Lopez of Palmdale was livid after losing a 10-round unanimous decision to Carlos Gonzalez on Monday night at the Forum.

Lopez, 30, a former Mexican Olympic silver medalist, was on the short end of the judges’ 95-93, 96-92 and 97-90 decision.

“He stung me once in the first round and that was it,” Lopez said. “He didn’t do anything after that. I beat him and he knows it.”

Heads up: Heavyweight Khoren Indjian, a bald-headed, 39-year-old from North Hollywood, fought to a second-round technical draw with Alex Desir of Los Angeles on the Forum card when Indjian (4-4-1) suffered a gash above the eye from a head butt.

Left out: Northridge sophomore Becky Snyder finished ninth in the three-meter springboard event at an NCAA championship-qualifying meet last weekend at Colorado Springs. The top six qualified for the NCAA meet.
