Burrell’s Effort Goes for Naught

SAN JOSE — Forward John Burrell scored 24 points, including five three-point baskets, but it wasn’t enough for Antelope Valley College in a 74-73 loss to Diablo Valley in the quarterfinals of the Junior College State Championships Thursday at the Events Center at San Jose State.
Diablo Valley (32-5) held a seven-point lead with 2:25 to play before Antelope Valley (30-5) rallied.
Diablo Valley will play in the semifinals today.
Jonathan George scored 15 points and Michael Hamelin added 14 and six assists for Antelope Valley.
Jason Williams scored 20 points for Diablo Valley. Delvin Armstrong scored 15 points, Toby Merchant 14 and Will Levy 13 for the Vikings.
Antelope Valley had 19 turnovers compared to 12 for Diablo Valley.
In the first half, Diablo Valley made only one of 10 attempts from three-point range, but Vikings were three of four in the second half.
