Park Mine Deal Upsets Lawmakers

A Clinton administration proposal to pay a mining company $65 million to abandon a Montana gold mine near Yellowstone National Park ran into scathing congressional criticism over how it would be financed. Several GOP lawmakers representing agricultural states accused the White House of paying off Crown Butte Resources of Canada at the expense of a popular agricultural conservation program. The company has yet to say whether it will accept the offer.
