MIDWEST REGIONAL

UCLA (21-7) vs. Charleston Southern (17-12), 7:10 p.m., Auburn Hills, Mich.

About UCLA: The Bruins are at their best when things are moving swiftly, and Charles O’Bannon, J.R. Henderson and Toby Bailey can find the space to fire. At the workout in the Palace on Wednesday, O’Bannon made about 80% of his shots and proclaimed himself “feeling fresh,” which is not a good sign for opponents. “Yeah, Charles is lucky, I’ll say that,” forward Kris Johnson said with a slight grin. For UCLA, though, it all starts with point guard Cameron Dollar, who keys the defense by attacking the opposition point guard and can get the offense really sparking by hitting an open shot or two.

* About Charleston Southern: Here’s the only game really worth reviewing--the Buccaneers’ stunning, 85-81 victory over South Carolina, in South Carolina’s building, on Dec. 28. Why is this so important? Though the Gamecocks were not in gear early in the season, they went on to beat Kentucky twice during Southeastern Conference play. In the upset, Brett Larrick dominated the talented Gamecock backcourt, scoring 30 points with six rebounds and seven assists, and now-injured point guard Errol McPherson had 20 points. At one point in the second half, Charleston Southern led by 20.

* Keys to the game: Adam Larrick has filled in for McPherson at point, and teamed smoothly with his older brother. The Larricks might be able to hold their own or possibly even outplay UCLA’s backcourt, and if their zone clogs up the Bruin ball movement, it’ll be up to the skinny Buccaneer frontline to do some damage against Jelani McCoy and J.R. Henderson. Which is unlikely. Forward Rolando Hourruitiner absolutely must have a huge game, as he did in the Big South title game against Liberty.
