DIVISION I GIRLS
Los Alamitos (23-4-3) vs. Newhall Hart (24-1-2), Cerritos Gahr HS, 8 p.m.
Since a disappointing 1-1 tie against Mission Viejo in the Division I final last season, Los Alamitos has been looking forward to this moment. The Griffins lost two key offensive players to graduation after last season but didn’t miss a step, going undefeated in Sunset League play. Seeded third in Division I, they have outscored four playoff opponents, 11-1 (the only goal against them was in a 2-1 victory over Edison in the semifinals). The fire on the Griffin team starts in the middle with Sommer Hammoud, a first-team All-Southern Section selection last season. Cyndi Tredway stepped up and took over the offensive role this season for the Griffins, scoring more than 20 goals. Hart advanced to the second round of the Division III tournament last season but moved to Division I this season after playoff divisions were realigned according to school enrollment. With 1,585 students, Hart barely made the enrollment cutoff for Division I, so it is one of the smallest schools playing in the division. Midfielder Laura Qualls has 30 goals and 23 assists this season, and she has scored one goal in each of Hart’s five playoff games.
