Re “Freed Palestinian Woman Object of Polarized Views,” March 3: A 24-year-old man is shot in the head while taking a walk with his wife. The accomplice to the murder, Rula abu Duhou, nine years later, says that she has no remorse. “One the contrary, I’m proud. And I wish I could do more for my country.” She says “I fought against the occupation and it doesn’t matter in the details.” Tell that to the victim’s wife.

At a time when Israeli and Palestinian leaders have come to the realization that negotiation rather than bloodshed is the way to achieve a real and lasting peace, how sad that this woman is totally unrepentant and, indeed, lionized by other Palestinians as a hero for her murderous deed. In reality, a hero is not the one who kills but rather, the one who tries to stop the killing.

Regarding Israel’s new housing project (Feb. 27), let Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remember that Americans invariably identify with the underdog. Let the apologists for Israel tell us why we should find sympathy, and provide financial support for Israel’s stance, when they continually appear to arrogantly impose their will on the Palestinian people, regardless of considerations of humanity, and in contravention of agreements.
