Teamster President Carey Returns Donation

Times Staff and Wire Reports

Teamster President Ron Carey returned $95,000 to a contributor after challenger James P. Hoffa alleged it was funneled to Carey’s reelection campaign by an employer. The Carey camp said the donation was returned only because the donor declined to open her personal financial accounts to the election’s federal overseer on privacy grounds. “It’s not a violation, there’s nothing wrong. It’s just one more attempt by the Hoffa people to flail at the wind. They can’t admit defeat,” said Jere Nash, chairman of Carey’s campaign. Hoffa’s attorneys, who have filed numerous protests of the election, called for a delay of the March 22 inaugural ceremony for Carey’s second term.
