Belmont Tries Again to Win City Section Title

Belmont High will try again Saturday to win a City Section title in boys’ soccer that has been more than elusive.
The Sentinels have played in four championship games since 1989 and have never won the title outright. They lost in 1989 and ‘92, and their victory over Bell in the ’94 final was later stripped because of the use of an ineligible player.
The school was back in the final last season but had to settle for a scoreless tie with Garfield.
Second-seeded Belmont (18-3-3) will meet unseeded Woodland Hills El Camino Real (20-3-6) in the final at 2 p.m. at East Los Angeles College.
Belmont advanced to the final with a 1-0 victory over Garfield Tuesday. It defeated El Camino Real, 2-0, in a tournament match in November.
The team is led by underclassmen, including sophomores Rodolfo Duran and Jose Borjaf. Duran has 20 goals and Borjaf hasn’t given up a goal in four playoff matches.
Twelve titles will be decided Friday and Saturday between the City and Southern sections. East Los Angeles College is the site for the City Section matches and Cerritos Gahr High for the Southern Section.
