Coach: Gary Sabella (11th year).
1996: 16-2, 8-2 in the South Coast League; finished 14th at team regional.
Key returners: Nick Petralia, three-time all-league performer, Sr.; Ryan Porte, Sr.; Justin Rauzon, Sr.
Key newcomers: Greg Del Fium, Jr.; Matt Gough, So.; Gary San Filippo, Jr.; Jeff Steele, Jr.
Outlook: The Mustangs tied Dana Hills for the league title last season, their seventh league title in eight seasons. They are expected to be in for another battle with the Dolphins. It’s early, but Sabella likes what he sees. “I think we’re going to be really competitive,” he said. “I’m a little more enthusiastic now that I’ve seen the team.” Much will depend on the play of Petralia, son of teaching pro Jim Petralia. “I expect Nick to be one of the best players in the county,” Sabella said. “He’s got the total package, but he hasn’t ever quite put it all together.” Currently, Rauzon is playing the best, followed by Petralia, Porte, Gough and Del Fium. The sixth spot is up for grabs, Sabella said.
