Retribution Sought Against Ronning

The Ducks have asked the NHL for supplementary discipline against Phoenix center Cliff Ronning for slashing Teemu Selanne during the Ducks’ 6-3 loss Thursday.

But Ronning’s reputation and Selanne’s retaliatory cross-check might limit the chances the Ducks’ appeal will succeed. No penalty was called on Ronning.

The incident started with both players slashing each other, and Selanne crumpled to the ice after being struck on the side of his knee. The pain didn’t keep him from playing, however.

“They’re always talking about baseball swings, and to me, that was a baseball swing,” said General Manager Jack Ferreira, upset that there was no penalty on a two-handed slash.

“He slashed me, I slashed him back,” Ronning told reporters after the game. “I think it’s known I’m not a dirty hockey player. I’ve only gotten four penalties this year. If anything, it should have been a penalty on both of us.”

Scoring prospect Frank Banham might make his NHL and season debut today against the Kings after being activated because of injuries to forwards Warren Rychel (back spasms), Joe Sacco (strained chest muscles) and Roman Oksiuta (groin pull). Banham had 83 goals in 72 games last season for the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League, but hasn’t played this season because of groin surgery . . . In other moves, Shawn Antoski was placed on injured reserve in anticipation of his Feb. 4 groin surgery and Jeremy Stevenson was assigned to Baltimore of the American Hockey League after removing him from injured reserve.
