Land Mines

Re “U.S. Reneges on Campaign to Ban Land Mines,” Commentary, Jan. 13:
As a Vietnam veteran I am enraged when I hear stories about land mines. Two-thirds of all Marine causalities in 1965 were from land mines and booby traps, 20% of all U.S. casualties in the Persian Gulf War and 26% of all U.S. casualties in Somalia were from land mines. President Clinton and the Joint Chiefs are making an error in judgment that parallels the decision to engage in a land war in Southeast Asia. Their lack of insight will continue to kill and maim both Americans soldiers and innocent civilians.
Land mines: The eternal mercenary, they never sleep, they are always ready to attack and they never miss.
