Downtown Los Angeles may be hosting its first vintage car race this Labor Day weekend.
L.A. Events, the company that sponsors the Los Angeles Marathon, has announced plans for the Inaugural Los Angeles Vintage Grand Prix Aug. 30 to Sept. 1.
The grand prix would include a vintage automobile race and a “Concourse D’Elegance” car show in the Chinatown and Olvera Street areas.
“The possibility of doing this event will assist the revitalization of downtown Los Angeles,” said Bonnie Brody, downtown field deputy to Councilman Richard Alatorre.
Bill Burke, president of L.A. Events, says the idea for the auto race has been floating around for about seven years, but this is the first time that it looks like the race and car show will actually happen.
“We have been exploring potential sponsorship, but we have not signed a single person. But we feel there is tremendous interest,” Burke said.
The City Council approved motions Wednesday to temporarily close off streets during Labor Day weekend.
About 25 races would be scheduled for the three-day weekend, including one featuring Ferraris.
The cars must be 20 years old to qualify.
