The 26-year-old grandson of former Dodger great Roy Campanella was shot and wounded by police after he allegedly broke into a house in Beverly Hills, authorities said.
Roy Masembe Campanella of Beverly Hills was shot early Sunday when police confronted him in the frontyard of a home, said Beverly Hills Police Lt. Frank Salcido.
Campanella was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound and a cut hand and released. He was booked for investigation of felony burglary and battery on a jailer after he allegedly grabbed the jailer by the head, Salcido said. He was released on $30,000 bail.
Campanella’s father said Tuesday that his son was unarmed when he was shot.
“My son is absolutely not a criminal and he is not guilty of burglary . . .” said Roy Campanella II, a TV and film director.
Officers received a 911 call from a man who said an intruder had confronted a couple in a bedroom of the house. Campanella’s grandfather was a Brooklyn Dodgers catcher whose career ended when he was paralyzed in a 1958 auto accident. Campanella, who was elected to the Hall of Fame, died in 1993 at the age of 71.
