Mater Dei’s Perry Named State Player of Year

Mater Dei wide receiver/defensive back Rod Perry has been chosen by Cal-Hi Sports as the 1996 state player of the year.
Perry led the Monarchs to a 14-0 finish and the Southern Section Division I championship. He caught 78 passes for 1,494 yards and 18 touchdowns during his senior season. Perry caught 143 passes, including 34 for touchdowns, in 31 games for Mater Dei.
Los Alamitos defensive back Ife Ohalete was selected first-team on defense, Fountain Valley offensive lineman Brian Hart was selected to the second team offense and Capistrano Valley running back Malaefou MacKenzie made the multipurpose second team.
Aliso Niguel Coach Joe Wood, who led his team to the Division V title, was chosen as the medium-sized schools’ coach of the year.
