Chicano Group Protests Policy Toward Mexico

Chanting and waving signs across the street from the Mexican consulate in Oxnard, a handful of Chicano activists on Friday protested U.S. border policy and the war against Zapatista rebels in southern Mexico.

The activists, mostly young students from Oxnard Community College, belong to the Committee on Raza Rights and the National Chicano Moratorium Committee, said organizer Jose Moreno.

The group stood on a corner at 4th Street and Oxnard Boulevard across the street from the Oxnard Regional Transportation Center.

“We’re here because many Mexican people come through here,” said Moreno. “We’re here to tell them the news that never gets covered.”

The group chanted to abolish the U.S.-Mexican border, to end U.S. involvement in Mexican affairs and support for the Zapatista rebels.
