Pact on Greenbelt Will Save City Some Green

A new agreement with Cerritos will simplify the maintenance of a jointly owned mini-park as well as save La Palma tax dollars, city officials said.

The pact concerns the small greenbelt on the cities’ border, at the north end of Denni Street near Maroon Drive.

Heretofore, the mowing, maintenance and watering has been done on different days by each city. La Palma crews handled the chores on Mondays, and Cerritos workers on Wednesdays.

La Palma City Public Works Director Ismile H. Noorbaksh recently told the council that Cerritos had proposed taking over the maintenance of the greenbelt and irrigation system in exchange for La Palma providing the water.

La Palma’s labor and water costs under the old arrangement were $165 a month, Noorbaksh said. The new plan would cost the city $55 a month, he said, for an annual savings of $1,320.

The City Council unanimously voted for the proposal.

“It makes sense,” said City Councilwoman Alta E. Duke. “This will provide for a continuity of maintenance, and it’s also a slight savings for the city. Any savings is a good thing.”
