California Beats UC Irvine, 10-8, in Water Polo

Peter Stern and Brad Kittredege each scored three goals to lead fifth-seeded California to a 10-8 victory over fourth-seeded UC Irvine in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Water Polo Tournament at Berkeley’s Spieker Aquatic Complex Friday.
Cal (14-6), ranked fourth in the nation, led 7-5 at halftime and 10-6 after three quarters.
UC Irvine (14-8), ranked fifth nationally, was led by senior Omar Amr with four goals. Anteater goalkeeper Tom Davis had eight saves. The Anteaters will play Long Beach State today in a consolation semifinal at 1:30 p.m.
Cal plays top-seeded Stanford in the championship semifinal today and Pacific, which upset third-seeded UCLA, 6-5, plays USC in the other semifinal game.
In the UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball tournament:
Wisconsin 78, UC Irvine 68--The Anteaters could not come back from their poor first half, in which they were outscored, 41-29. Megan Stafford led UCI with 20 points and seven rebounds. Leticia Oseguera had 14 points and Kirsten Cappel had 12 for the Anteaters. Karie Cattanach had a game-high 22 for Wisconsin.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Cal State Fullerton 84, Eastern Washington 54--Justine McMahan scored a career-high 25 points for the Titans (2-0).
McMahan, who scored 18 of her points in the first half, had a game-high nine rebounds. Dee Braxton scored 11 points and had eight rebounds and Kris Sigg and Gabrielle Castro each had 10 points for Fullerton.
Tracy Ford led Eastern Washington (2-1) with 11 points.
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
Long Beach State 3, UCLA 2--Jenn Snyder had 22 kills and Jessica Alvarado had 19 kills and 16 digs as Long Beach won, 8-15, 15-13, 15-6, 12-15, 15-13.
The largest crowd to watch an NCAA volleyball match at the Pyramid (2,094) saw setter Misty May record 72 assists and Nique Crump get 18 kills for the 49ers (31-2). UCLA is 17-14.
