The Southern Section girls’ volleyball finals will be Saturday at Cypress College, but when the winners are crowned, the significance of their titles will remain difficult to decipher.
The wealth of talent has been spread thin in the new 10-division format in which teams are aligned according to school enrollment. Three of the county’s top teams, Laguna Beach, Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach, are playing in different divisions.
For the second consecutive year, Laguna Beach (22-2) will play Manhattan Beach Mira Costa (22-1) in the top division final, I-AA, at 7:30 p.m. Mira Costa won last year, but the top-seeded Mustangs are looking less invincible this year, having been pushed to five games against Newport Harbor in the semifinals.
In Division I-A, top-seeded Fountain Valley (17-2) will play second-seeded Capistrano Valley (14-3) at 1 p.m. The Barons won the Sunset League this season and the Cougars placed second in South Coast League behind Dana Hills.
In Division II-AA, second-seeded Huntington Beach (18-1) will play top-seeded Santa Barbara (19-3) at 4:30 p.m.
Other county teams in finals: Division II-A, Santa Margarita (13-5) vs. Westlake Village Westlake (19-2) at 10:30 a.m.; Division IV-A, Calvary Chapel (17-6) vs. Cerritos Valley Christian (15-2) at 7 p.m.
