SATURDAY: Strong ‘Suit

The 10-piece band Lawsuit can scarcely fit on the big stage at Nicholby’s, where they will open for the Upbeat. With plenty of drummers and horn players, they hope to pack the dance floor even more than the stage. With eight years of doing everything from salsa to ska, Bay Area-based Lawsuit should have the dancers positively enthralled, not to mention sweaty.

Even better for the dancers is the greatest ska band since the English Beat and the most famous band in all of Carpinteria, the Upbeat. Ten years’ experience, one CD, no hurry.

Lawsuit will kick things off around 9:30 p.m. at Nicholby’s, upstairs at 404 E. Main St. in Ventura. Tickets are $6. Call 653-2320.

SUNDAY: Snow Screening

Warren Miller’s annual homage to snow and those who love to swoop down the powdery stuff will be shown at two county venues.

Each year, the feature-length ski adventure film serves as a kind of kickoff for the ski season, and a vicarious trip around the world to some of the hottest ski spots.

Miller’s 47th installment, this year aptly titled “Snowriders,” captures the sporty exploits of skiers taking to the slopes on everything from traditional skis to sleighs to inner tubes to garbage bags. There’s also a look at the world’s best mogul skiers and ski runs.

The movie will be shown at the Ventura Theatre, 26 S. Chestnut St., at 7 and 9:10 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $7 in advance, $7.50 at the door. Call 648-1888.

Then it’s on to the Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks, for two screenings on Nov. 30, 6 and 9 p.m. Tickets are $12. Call 449-2787.

Romance Restored

The Ojai Film Society will present the restored version of Jacques Demy’s romantic masterpiece “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” at 4:30 p.m. at the Ojai Playhouse.

First released in 1964, “Cherbourg” won the grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival, was nominated for five Academy Awards and helped launch the career of co-star Catherine Deneuve.

Described by one critic as “a Renoir painting come to life,” the musical--all dialogue is sung rather than spoken--features Deneuve as a 17-year-old girl forbidden by her mother from marrying a handsome auto mechanic about to be shipped off to the French army.

The meticulously restored film--lauded for it use of color--includes a soundtrack remixed in Dolby stereo under the supervision of composer Michel Legrand.

GLANCE AHEAD

The Ventura County Children’s Festival will present “The Snow Queen” by the acclaimed Hudson Vagabond Puppets of New York on Dec. 1 at the Civic Arts Plaza Auditorium in Thousand Oaks.

The production is a combination of theater and ballet set to the music of Archangelo Corelli.

UP THE COAST

Paul Silverthorne, principal violinist with the London Symphony Orchestra, will perform Saturday and Sunday with the Santa Barbara Symphony at Arlington Theatre.

Conductor Gisel Ben-Dor will lead the orchestra in a program that includes Walton’s Viola Concerto, Vaughan Williams’ “The Wasps Overture,” Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suite and Bernstein’s “West Side Story Dances.” Tickets: $11-$36. Call 963-4408.
