SCORECARD: COUNTY HIGHLIGHTS FROM WEEK 10

IF THE HORNS FIT
In the waning moments of the Mater Dei-Capistrano Valley game Friday, the Monarchs appeared to be trying to catch Capistrano Valley by surprise with a fake punt on fourth down. But punter John Leonard was stopped short of a first down.
“Our fault,” Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson said. “We thought we signaled to him to punt, but somehow it got messed up. When I saw him run across the field I thought to myself, ‘I’m gonna wind up being the biggest goat in Southern California.’ ”
Fortunately for Rollinson, Mater Dei held on for a 20-15 victory.
PLUGGING AWAY
There was much confusion in the press box Thursday night at Western High before the start of Loara’s home game against Cypress. There weren’t enough chairs, the Loara spotters’ headphones didn’t work, the PA system squealed and the scoreboard clock didn’t work.
When the scoreboard finally lit up at the start of the second half, a fan quipped, “Did someone finally plug that thing in?”
ON THE RECORD
‘I’ve worked enough seven-day work weeks. Now I don’t have to watch film tomorrow.’
--Bob Rau, former La Habra and Buena Park varsity coach on his new role as freshman football coach at Buena Park.
‘We were in a haze early. Maybe we’ll start banging on the walls before the games to get our guys ready.’
--Tim Devaney, Sunny Hills coach, who was concerned about his team’s slow start during its 36-17 victory over Buena Park Friday.
